Super Bowl Closes Out Another ASFLC Season

The Mashers scored on their first possession and never looked back as they defeated Madison 45-13 in the ASFLC Super Bowl. The first drive was primarily the ground attack by Ray Rice including a 5yd touchdown run. The next four touchdowns for the Mashers would come through the air as Drew Brees hit four different receivers for scores. The final one being a 51 yd touchdown to TE Vernon Davis. Madison was only able to muster two field goals until late in the game when Kyle Orton hit Greg Olsen on a 5yd touchdown pass. Madison turned the ball over 4 times including 2 fumbles and 2 interceptions by Kyle Orton. The Mashers were able to hold breakaway threat Jamaal Charles to just 24 yards on only 8 carries. The MVP was Drew Brees who went 19-24 for 256 yards and 4 touchdowns for a qb rating of 150.7.

Congratulations to Jeff Smith on a great season as a first year coach in Madison. Also congratulations to Mike Capriotti of Memphis and Jeffrey Brown of Philadelphia for leading their respective teams to conference championship games.

Overall this season, the AFC was the stronger conference. Five out of the top 7 records in our league were in the AFC with the best two records being the Mashers and Philadelphia. While the Mashers only lost 1 game all season (division rival Bucky!), Philadelphia only lost 2 in the regular season (one to Blackburn and one to Mashers) and then lost in the playoffs again to the Mashers.

After the Mashers and Philadelphia, the next two best records were in the NFC with Chatham and DaGints both finishing 13-3. Both teams were upset in the first round of the playoffs. The final three teams with 10 wins or more were all in the AFC with Wisconsin winning 12 and Wauankee and Orange County each winning 10.

It will be interesting to see if the NFC comes back strong next year and catches up to the AFC or if the AFC continues its dominance.

After 7 seasons of the ASFLC, 6 championships go to AFC teams and only 1 to an NFC team. Here are the breakdowns:

Mashers - 4
S.F (now Orange County) - 1
Eau Claire (now Wyoming)- 1
DaGints (only NFC team) - 1

Super Bowl Matchup

NFC Central Division Champ Madison
vs
AFC Central Division Champ Mashers

AFC Champion - Mashers

The Mashers return to the Super Bowl to defend their title after defeating Philadelphia 23-12. The Mashers put the first score on the board with Sebastian Janikowski's 23 yd fg late in the first qtr for a 3-0 lead. Philadelphia answered right back with a good drive capped off by a 27 yd touchdown strike from Brett Favre to Brad Smith. After the Mashers punted Philly down to their own 8 yard line, the Thugs came up with the play of the first half. After getting a couple of first downs and almost out of time, Favre found Jermichael Finley on a short pass and Finley did the rest. Finley broke away for a 66 yd touchdown to give Philadelphia a 12-3 lead. Philly was unable to convert their 2 point conversion. The Mashers got the second half kickoff and drove right down the field and punched it in from 8yds out on a Ray Rice run to trim the deficit to 12-10. On the very next possession, the Mashers Bradie James intercepted a short pass and returned it down to Philly's 37 yd line. The Mashes took the lead 13-12 on a Janikowski 40 yd fg. The Mashers would add another field goal to take a 16-12 lead. The final nail in the coffin came with 8:42 left when Drew Brees found Daniel Graham across the middle and he was able to get some blocks and avoid Philly's defensive backs as he rumbled 57 yds for the final score. The Mashers were able to hold Philly from making any comeback and they went on to win 23-12. The difference in the game was Drew Brees vs Brett Favre. Although Favre threw 2 touchdown passes, he was only able to complete 6 passes all day. Meanwhile, Brees went 23 of 32 for 275 yards and 1 touchdown.

The Mashers will return to the Super Bowl for a rematch with their opponent two years ago. The Mashers won that Super Bowl over Madison 31-17 under former coach Bill Ferguson.

NFC Champion - Madison

In a divisional rematch, the Madison King Cobras defeat the Memphis Mafia 31-17. Madison advances to the Super Bowl for the second time in the last 3 seasons. This time they make it under first year ASFLC coach Jeff Smith. The tempo was set early when Louis Delmas intercepted Ben Roethlisberger on Memphis' first possession. Madison jumped out to a 17-3 halftime lead and never looked back. Memphis scored their first touchdown late in the 3rd qtr and then scored again late in the 4th but it was too little, too late. Kyle Orton had one of his best games, throwing 16 of 23 for 195 yards and rushing for a touchdown in the 3rd qtr.

Madison will play either the Mashers or Philadelphia in the Super Bowl.
